- Caption
- Archangel Gabriel or Raphael. Detail of altar frontal from the early 11th century made of gilded wood and decorated with precious stones. The sculptures depict Christ in Majesty, St. Benedict, and the archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. The work was commissioned by Emperor Henry II (1002-24), whose symbol can be seen at the foot of Christ, for an important abbey, perhaps Fulda. It was later given to Basel Cathedral before being donated to the museum in 1854.
