Methuselah. One of the finest of the 43 surviving panels of the Ancestors of Christ dating from the late 12th century and originally placed in the clerestory. This is now the fifth light in the bottom row of the south window (s. XXVIII). This panel gives its name to one of the major artists employed at Canterbury Cathedral after the fire of 1174, the Methuselah Master. His portraits are characterized by a monumentality inspired by antique sculpture, yet with a humanity and warmth. He also painted the Adam panel.
