- Caption
- Main prayer hall of El Transito Synagogue in Toledo, looking towards the east wall. The synagogue was built in 1357 by Samuel ha-Levi, treasurer and advisor to King Pedro I. The walls are covered with intricate Mudejar stucco decoration and Hebrew inscriptions glorifying God, King Pedro, and Samuel ha-Levi. Psalms are inscribed along the top of the walls; a poetic description of the Temple is on the east wall above the Ark (where the Torah is kept). The beautiful ceiling is made of cedar, said to have been imported from Lebanon.
