- Site of the 11th-century abbey church, looking east to the altar area. The altar was positioned over the traditional site of King Harold's death in the Battle of Hastings and surrounded by an ambulatory with three radiating chapels. The first Norman church to be built in England, it was destroyed in the 16th century after the abbey was dissolved and given to a private owner. Battle Abbey, East Sussex, England.
