The Four Gospels
- Caption
-
Detail of a mosaic in the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, dating from c.430 AD. It shows an open cabinet with four books inside, labeled with the names of the Four Evangelists. The books are therefore the Four Gospels of the New Testament, and this is an important early depiction of them as a canonical set. The rest of the mosaic shows St. Lawrence and his fiery iron grate. Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, Ravenna, Italy.
