A large piece of a black granite column, said to be the Column of Flagellation - the pillar to which Christ was tied while he was scourged before the crucifixion. The relic is said to have been brought from Constantinople by the papal legate Giovanni Colonna, titular cardinal of Santa Prassede, in 1223.
